The labor market is still debating whether artificial intelligence is inflating productivity or quietly eroding demand for human work. Recent reversals by firms that attempted aggressive AI substitution underscore this point. Systems optimized for speed struggle with ambiguity, edge cases, and emotional nuance. Organizations built around human error tolerance cannot simply swap people for models without redesigning workflows entirely. The lesson is not that AI fails – but that unchecked automation creates hidden operational debt.

Sophie Leclerc, NewsTrackerToday’s technology analyst, argues that 2026 will divide workers into two distinct categories. The first group uses AI as a convenience tool for drafting and summarization. The second builds structured, auditable pipelines: clearly scoped prompts, grounded inputs, verification layers, and escalation paths when models fail. Leclerc notes that as AI output becomes commoditized, employers will pay a premium for employees who can make AI dependable inside real-world operations.
