Bluesky Is Growing Again – But Will Users Actually Stay?

A burst of new features suggests that Bluesky is attempting to convert a short-term spike in attention into more durable user engagement. The platform has rolled out tools that allow users to share live broadcasts from Twitch and introduced so-called “cashtags,” enabling real-time discussion of publicly traded stocks using ticker symbols. The timing is notable. Bluesky’s update follows a sharp increase in app downloads after controversy surrounding AI-generated deepfake content on X spilled into mainstream headlines. While migration driven by outrage is often fleeting, at NewsTrackerToday we see Bluesky’s product decisions as an attempt to anchor new users around habitual behaviors rather than momentary protest.

Cashtags, in particular, target one of the most entrenched use cases historically associated with X: live market commentary. Liam Anderson, financial markets analyst, argues that stock discussions create a high-frequency engagement loop, as users return multiple times a day to track sentiment shifts. In his view, even partial success in capturing this flow could materially improve Bluesky’s daily active usage, though it also raises moderation risks tied to spam and speculative hype. The expansion of the experimental “Live Now” feature serves a complementary purpose. By allowing users to display a temporary LIVE badge that links directly to Twitch streams, Bluesky positions itself as a coordination layer rather than a competing streaming service. At NewsTrackerToday, we interpret this as a low-cost strategy to associate the platform with real-time events without bearing the infrastructure burden of native video hosting.

Still, structural challenges remain. Previous download surges have not translated into sustained activity, highlighting the difficulty of persuading users to abandon long-standing posting habits elsewhere. Isabella Moretti, corporate strategy and platform competition analyst, notes that switching costs in social media are less about features and more about social graphs and routine. Without strong discovery tools and creator incentives, new functionality alone may struggle to change long-term behavior.

The broader regulatory and reputational backdrop also matters. Heightened scrutiny of AI-generated content and platform accountability is reshaping user expectations around safety and governance. News Tracker Today views Bluesky’s moment as less about capitalizing on a rival’s misstep and more about demonstrating that an alternative social model can balance openness with control.

From a growth perspective, the near-term outlook points to volatility rather than linear expansion. Engagement around cashtags is likely to rise quickly, followed by moderation challenges that will test Bluesky’s operational readiness. Meanwhile, the Live Now feature’s impact will depend on whether users return to the platform to discuss streams, rather than simply clicking through and leaving.

In our assessment at NewsTrackerToday, Bluesky’s latest update reflects a strategic pivot toward behaviors that drive repeat usage: markets, live events, and real-time conversation. Whether this momentum persists will depend on execution over the coming months – particularly the platform’s ability to curb abuse, surface relevant voices, and reduce the friction of rebuilding social routines from scratch.
