No Ads, Just Confusion? OpenAI Scrambles to Explain ChatGPT’s Strange Promotional Prompts

OpenAI has long positioned ChatGPT as a space where innovation takes precedence over monetization. But the past several days have shown just how fragile user trust can be. After paid subscribers reported seeing prompts that resembled sponsored recommendations for brands like Peloton and Target, the company found itself compelled to clarify why users were encountering what looked very much like early steps toward an advertising model. Officially, OpenAI maintains that ChatGPT does not display ads and is not running live advertising experiments. What users saw, the company insists, was merely part of a limited interface test showing applications built on the new ChatGPT Apps platform, with no financial relationships involved. But user reactions revealed a different reality: formal explanations do not always outweigh visceral concerns. Online, questions about transparency, boundaries, and intent began spreading faster than OpenAI could respond.

This is why the conciliatory tone from Chief Scientist Mark Chen resonated so strongly. In contrast to more defensive messaging, Chen openly admitted that the company “did not meet expectations” and emphasized that anything resembling advertising must be handled with extreme caution. He confirmed that OpenAI disabled the prompts in question and is now working on improving model accuracy to prevent similar issues. Chen also noted that the company is exploring user-level controls – potentially allowing subscribers to reduce or fully disable such prompts.

As technology analyst Sophie Leclerc explains, “OpenAI isn’t at risk because users saw something that looked like an ad. Yet internally, the company’s moves point to a more complicated landscape. Earlier this year, OpenAI hired Fiji Sumo – formerly of Instacart and Facebook – with expectations that she would help develop a scalable advertising ecosystem. Many interpreted this as a clear signal that the company was exploring a commercial layer for its rapidly expanding platform. But according to a recent internal memo, CEO Sam Altman declared a “red code,” temporarily prioritizing improvements to ChatGPT’s quality above all other initiatives, including advertising-related product work.

Any future monetization strategy will only succeed if the product is unquestionable in quality.
