NotebookLM Is Dead. Long Live Gemini Notebook.

Google is renaming NotebookLM, its AI-powered research and note-taking tool, to Gemini Notebook, continuing a pattern of folding independently branded products back under the Gemini name once they’ve proven themselves. The tool has grown from an experimental 2023 project called Tailwind into a product used by 30 million people and more than 600,000 organizations, and Google is renaming it at precisely the moment it’s adding a genuinely new capability rather than at launch. That timing, a rename arriving alongside a real feature upgrade rather than on its own, is what NewsTrackerToday keys into as the more deliberate branding choice than a simple identity refresh.

The functional upgrade is a code-execution environment built into each notebook, turning it into its own secure container where users can generate code to make outputs interactive and run complex data analysis directly against multiple uploaded sources at once. That’s a meaningfully different capability than the summarization and podcast-generation features NotebookLM built its reputation on, closer to a lightweight analysis tool than a research assistant.

Liam Anderson reads the monetization logic behind the rollout sequencing: “Code execution ships first to Google AI Ultra subscribers and Workspace customers on the higher-tier AI Expanded Access plan, with standard Pro users getting it only in the coming weeks. That’s a deliberate premium-tier gate on the most substantial capability upgrade this product has gotten in years, which tells you Google sees code execution as a genuine differentiator worth reserving for its highest-paying tier, not a feature it needs to rush to everyone at once.” That tiered rollout, more than the rename itself, is what NewsTrackerToday stacks up as the clearer signal of where Google sees this product’s commercial future.

NotebookLM’s influence on the wider industry has been significant enough that competitors built directly in response to it: multiple companies released open versions of its podcast-generation feature, and several research tools launched explicitly positioning themselves as alternatives to it. A tool influential enough to spawn its own competitive category getting absorbed into the broader Gemini brand marks a specific kind of maturity milestone for a product.

Sophie Leclerc, who covers the technology sector, reads the access-expansion plan as the more consequential long-term change: “Notebooks are already viewable inside the standalone Gemini app, and Google says they’ll soon be reachable through AI Mode in Search directly. That’s the real strategic move here, folding a standalone research tool into the search experience hundreds of millions of people already use daily, rather than requiring anyone to discover or open a separate app at all.” That search-integration path, more than the rename or the code-execution feature, is what News Tracker Today folds into as the actual long-game Google is playing with this product.

This isn’t the first time Google has retired an independently earned product name in favor of consolidating everything under Gemini, and the pattern by now is familiar enough that it barely qualifies as news on its own. What makes this instance notable is the substance riding alongside the name change, a real capability upgrade rather than just a logo swap.

Whether burying the NotebookLM name costs Google any of the grassroots goodwill and word-of-mouth recognition the product built over three years, or whether folding it into Gemini simply extends that recognition to an even larger audience already inside Google’s ecosystem, is what NewsTrackerToday settles with as the real bet behind this rebrand.
