X Says It Caught 1.5 Million Stolen Posts. It’s Sending the Money Back.

X is toughening its stance against creators who steal content and solicit engagement to abuse the platform’s revenue-sharing program, according to product lead Nikita Bier, who said the platform’s newest Grok AI model now detects duplicated content at three times the rate of its previous version. The company says it has already identified 1.5 million stolen posts in its latest detection cycle and is redirecting more than $1 million in creator payouts back to the people who actually made the content. A platform quantifying both the theft and the redirected payout in the same announcement is what NewsTrackerToday flags through as a more concrete accountability claim than most platforms attempt on this problem.

The mechanics matter here. Adding watermarks, intros, or other edits specifically meant to disguise stolen content as original will now result in the monetized impressions being sent to the original uploader instead of the reposter, a rule that extends to duplicated text posts as well as video and images. Bier noted the single most commonly stolen text post right now is a joke about the platform still being called Twitter by users, itself a small signal of how much recycled content actually circulates on the platform daily.

Sophie Leclerc, who covers the technology sector, reads why detection accuracy matters more than the headline multiplier: “Tripling the detection rate for duplicated content sounds impressive, but the real test is false-positive rate, not just raw catch volume. A model that’s three times more aggressive at flagging duplicates needs to be equally careful about not misidentifying genuine remixes, quote-tweets, or fair commentary as theft. X hasn’t published that false-positive number, which is the detail that actually determines whether creators trust this system or start fighting every flag.” That missing false-positive metric, more than the detection multiplier itself, is what NewsTrackerToday reads round as the real gap in this announcement.

X has been building toward this for weeks, having added an improved video editor and recorder earlier this month specifically to encourage creators to post original content through X’s own tools rather than reposting someone else’s work. Because AI tools make it easier to disguise stolen content at scale, the company has also accelerated bot suspensions, reportedly identifying and removing more than 200 bots per minute as of earlier this year.

Isabella Moretti reads the creator-economy incentive structure this is meant to fix: “Revenue-sharing programs create an obvious incentive to repost viral content rather than create it, especially when detection lags behind the posting volume. Redirecting payouts to original creators doesn’t just punish theft, it actively restores the incentive the program was supposed to create in the first place: reward the person who made the thing, not the fastest person to repost it.” That incentive-restoration logic, more than the enforcement mechanics, is what News Tracker Today ties back to as the actual design goal behind this update.

X’s new enforcement also targets engagement-bait tactics directly, including posts soliciting follows or replies in exchange for promises like following back. Users caught doing this three or more times will be removed from the creator program entirely and referred to X’s policy team for potential suspension, a penalty structure that treats repeated engagement manipulation as seriously as outright content theft.

None of this guarantees creators who’ve had content stolen in the past will see any retroactive compensation, since the redirected payouts appear to apply only to the current detection cycle going forward. Whether the tripled detection rate holds up against creators actively trying to evade it, or whether this becomes another arms race between disguising techniques and detection models, is what NewsTrackerToday closes round as the real question the next detection cycle will answer.
