Visa’s Profit Rose 11%. It’s Still Cutting 2,600 Jobs the Same Day

Visa reported fiscal third-quarter net revenue of $11.6 billion, up 14% year-over-year, with non-GAAP earnings per share of $3.32, an 11% increase, driven by growth in payments volume, cross-border activity, and processed transactions. On the same day, the company announced plans to eliminate roughly 2,600 jobs, about 7% of its total workforce, concentrated in technology and product teams. A company posting double-digit profit growth while cutting thousands of jobs in the same earnings release is what NewsTrackerToday weighs on as the more consequential pairing than either number on its own.

The operational numbers behind the revenue growth are broad-based: payments volume grew 10% on a constant-dollar basis, total processed transactions reached 71.7 billion, also up 10%, and cross-border volume climbed 13% overall. Data processing revenue rose 17% to $6.0 billion and service revenue grew 14% to $4.9 billion, meaning the growth wasn’t concentrated in one segment but showed up consistently across Visa’s core transaction-processing business.

Ethan Cole reads the consumer-spending signal underneath these numbers tersely: “Ryan McInerney called consumer and business spending ‘resilient’ in the earnings statement, and the transaction volume data backs that up directly, this isn’t a company benefiting from fee increases or one-time items, it’s genuine growth in the number and value of transactions flowing through Visa’s network. That’s a meaningfully positive signal about the broader spending environment, coming from a company with about as clear a view into real-time consumer behavior as exists anywhere in the economy.” That transaction-volume evidence, more than the headline EPS beat, is what NewsTrackerToday checks to as the more useful macro signal buried in this earnings release.

The layoffs sit alongside a specific explanation from leadership: McInerney said artificial intelligence is helping accelerate the transition and reshape how work gets done at the company, tying the workforce reduction directly to AI-driven changes in how Visa’s technology and product functions operate, rather than framing it as a response to weaker business performance.

Liam Anderson reads the earnings-day layoff timing as a deliberate signal to investors: “Announcing job cuts on the same day as a strong earnings beat lets Visa frame the reduction as forward-looking efficiency rather than distress-driven cost cutting, a framing that’s much easier to sell to markets alongside double-digit revenue growth than it would be during a weak quarter. The $237 million litigation provision tied to the interchange multidistrict case and $563 million in severance costs both landed as special items this quarter too, meaning Visa absorbed several one-time costs in the same release where it could point to genuinely strong underlying growth.” That earnings-day framing, more than the layoffs themselves, is what NewsTrackerToday reads round as the more calculated part of Tuesday’s disclosure.

Visa returned $6.2 billion to shareholders this quarter through buybacks and dividends, repurchasing about 14.5 million shares at an average price of $330.71, and still had $28.4 billion in remaining share-repurchase authorization as of June 30, alongside a declared quarterly dividend of $0.670 per share.

None of this confirms whether the AI-driven restructuring McInerney described actually delivers the efficiency gains the company is attributing to it, since a 7% workforce reduction concentrated in technology and product teams carries real execution risk regardless of the stated rationale. Whether Visa’s AI-driven efficiency push translates into sustained margin improvement over coming quarters, or whether this round of cuts becomes the first of several as the company continues restructuring around AI tools, is what News Tracker Today closes round as the real question this earnings release leaves for the next several quarters to answer.
